MacBook Exit Wounds

February 1st, 2010

This looks like the work of a professional.

This MacBook screen was “pierced” straight through the LCD and right through the display cable.

We have no idea what could have caused this type impact (bullet, spear, rail gun?) but the accuracy and location of the hit suggests someone that has familiarity with Mac anatomy.

Suspects include Steve Balmer, Mark Wahlberg or perhaps a disgruntled Mac technician (if such a person even exists.) Hmmm???

Cracked iPhone 3GS Screen

January 21st, 2010

White 32GB iPhone 3GS in for Service

We see a lot of cracked iPhone screens but this one in particular is worth a look.

The screen and glass digitizer have been severely cracked. This may be the most cracked, in tact screen shatter we’ve seen.

Usually with damage of this type, more of the screen and glass would fall away completely.

You can make out what we believe are the initial cracks on the screen running from the top right corner down to the the lower center and then back to the right.

It’s possible that the high density of cracks throughout the glass (especially to the upper right of the home button) were caused by repeat pressure or rolling on the glass surface.

The plastic backing was in good shape with no cracking or other visual damage which is rare for this level of display cracking. Usually when we see iPhones in this shape, it’s because they were run over.

We can replace the screen and digitizer in cases like this, though removing the glass shards can be quite time consuming. The main concern is protecting the cables or components that lie underneath.

MacBook Unibody – Cracked Screen

July 10th, 2009
MacBook Unibody with cracked glass.

MacBook Unibody with cracked glass.

Ouch!

Looks like the screen on this MacBook Unibody took quite a hit. The impact actually came from the back of the display house. Judging by the small size of the impact dent, I’m guessing golf ball?

You can see the Unibody glass is not safety glass and breaks up into very sharp pieces. Our technicians wear safety goggles when removing the glass to protect from flying pieces of glass.

Strangely enough, the LED on the above MacBook survived in tact (albeit scratched from the glass.)

If the glass screen on your Unibody does crack, take care with any broken pieces and try to keep the lid closed until the glass can be replaced. I’d say 50% of the time, the LED can be saved.

FORE!

MacBook Air Screen Repair

June 17th, 2009
A MacBook Air in the process of screen replacement.

A MacBook Air in the process of screen replacement.

MacBook Air’s are a great lightweight Mac laptop. Unfortunately, we see quite a few in with cracked or damaged screens.

The above MacBook Air is getting its LED screen replaced and we thought it was a good time to point out what lies beneath the display bezel.

1. Display Connection – This is the cable that provides the power and signal from the logic board to the LED.

2. Latch Magnets – These allow the Air’s lid to stay shut when closed. There are a set on each side.

3. Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) – This sensor lets the laptop know when the lights are dimmed . The system then lowers the screen brightness and turns on the back-lit keyboard. To turn the backlit keyboard on in a bright room, just place your thumb over the left side of the iSight camera to cover the ALS.

4. iSight Camera - The iSight camera assembly can be seen here with it’s light to the right of the camera.

5. Microphone - The mic assembly can be seen here.

6. Sleep Magnet - The sleep magnet activates sleep mode when the lid is closed. As the magnet gets close to the top case, there is a switch in the top case with two metal flaps that connect when the magnet  is in close proximity, thus putting the machine to sleep. When the lid is opened, the two metal flaps in the sleep switch in the top case re-open (their natural state) and the machine turns back on.

Once the display bezel is removed (a tricky process,) a new LED screen is installed and tested (the point the above Air is in) and the bezel is re-attached. Good as new.
