MacBook Unibody – Cracked Screen

MacBook Unibody with cracked glass.

MacBook Unibody with cracked glass.

Ouch!

Looks like the screen on this MacBook Unibody took quite a hit. The impact actually came from the back of the display house. Judging by the small size of the impact dent, I’m guessing golf ball?

You can see the Unibody glass is not safety glass and breaks up into very sharp pieces. Our technicians wear safety goggles when removing the glass to protect from flying pieces of glass.

Strangely enough, the LED on the above MacBook survived in tact (albeit scratched from the glass.)

If the glass screen on your Unibody does crack, take care with any broken pieces and try to keep the lid closed until the glass can be replaced. I’d say 50% of the time, the LED can be saved.

FORE!

is this covered under my warranty? and has this been a regular problem with the new MACS with the Unibody glass? i just travelled with mine, which was flat in a protective case in my hand luggage with new actual impact along route which would have caused this, and i just opened it to find the screen cracked.

what will APPLE tell me? i just bought it. i dont even know how it happened.

    thanks, Madeleine

This is usually not covered under warranty as some pressure or impact is needed to break the glass. You could try contacting Apple directly 1-800-SOS-APPL and see what they say.

    Madeleine,
The new Macbooks have soft screens. my son’s was 3 weeks old, he closed it one night in perfect condition, and opened it the next morning to a cracked screen. Apple (the store, the Apple Care, their Tech support will say “Not covered, it is damaged, “you must have closed it with a pencil in it” I am taking them to small claims court. they want to charge $800 for a $900 mac (there was an educator discount) when it was covered for 3 months and had apple care. Feel free to send me a copy of your statement. There is a blog that lists people all over the world with the same problem, and have gotten the same answer. MAC does not want to own up to making a soft unreliable screen that you can’t even open or close without it cracking. Unheard of.
