Q. What is the rpm anyway and why is it important?
A. The rpm is a measure of the rotations per minute of the hard disk platters. The higher the rpm, the faster the read/write of the drive. There are other specs that determine the speed as well (not all v6 car engines have the same horsepower) but this one gets the most attention.
Q. What about battery life?
A. While most 7200rpm drives use more power than their 5400rpm counterparts, the difference is usually not noticed by the user.
Q. How much faster are the 7200rpm drives?
A. This depends on what applications are used. While all apps will see a slight speed boost, video editing and apps that work with large files will see the most difference.
Q. Is there a reliability difference?
A. While most 7200rpm drives are a little louder, we haven’t noticed any higher RMA rate with these drives.
Q. So what drive is right for me?
A. 5400rpm – For a user that wants the most storage at the best price. Primarily uses the machine for web use and has lot of media files.
A. 7200rpm – For a user that always wants their machine to be faster. Uses Pro apps and accesses files from other disks.
